Inspired by a Cat

I was amused and even a little annoyed by my cat, Aggie, this morning.  She was especially needy.  Sitting outside my bedroom door, she went into her common yowl (she’s part Siamese…  it’s not a nice little mew).  “Aggie!”  I had to resort to the squirting her with water as she scampered down the stairs.  Once I also made it downstairs, Aggie did everything she knew to beg for my attention.  First it was the “meow!” (not quite as annoying as the yowl), then it was prostrating herself, belly-up on the kitchen rug, and lastly, jumping on top of the microwave so as to have eye and head contact with me.  One of her favorite things to do when she needs love is to rub her head against me ---  my hands and my head are the preferred targets.

As I succumbed to her enticements for belly and head rubs, and as I spoke soothing little words of love and, yes, actually delight to my little feline friend, I was struck with the thought of how much God must delight to stroke us and speak warm words of love over us.  Do we cry out expectantly to God with as much enthusiasm as my little cat?  Do we nuzzle up next to Him and expect a gentle touch?  Do we believe that He will delight to do so???  God is never annoyed with us.  In fact, Psalm 147:11 says, ”the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”  He delights in us when we nuzzle up close to Him and hope in His love.  And not only so, but we get to enjoy the warmth of His touch and soothing voice.  My cat is so endearing when she tips her head up, closes her eyes and purrrrrs.  I can’t resist to give her love when she’s like that (even while shedding hair all over the place, especially on my clothes).  And as much as Aggie revels in my love, how much more can we revel in God’s???  Have you ever thought of purring in God’s presence?  I know that sounds strange, but maybe the Lord put our little feline friends here as an object lesson.  I encourage you to give that some thought, and then go nuzzle up close to God and let Him gently love you and delight over you.
